Hello, TDE has no native support for Pulseaudio. It
can use Alsa
directly, or Pulseaudio with Alsa redirection.
If you have no pulseausio at all, it should work with Alsa out of the box.
Try opening the TDE Control Center, go to the
"Sound System" section,
and look for Arts-related options there.
So much has happened since I wrote my OP that I'm not sure if I did anything
else to fix this besides:
I was trying to use a mono pin jack cable instead of stereo. With a stereo
cable it's working just fine, in spite of dmesg showing "No response from
codec" and "Codec #1 probe error; disabling it". On a different PC I took
the
mono cable off of, it was working, but only on one speaker. Why on this one
it wouldn't work at all I have no idea.
