I don't use search since I know the names of the applications I use most often so I have a couple of terminals open and just type in the names, e.g. 'gimp&' and voila!
(frankly, I seldom even look at the 'desktop'; I'd have to look to see what icons are present there. for my 'use case', it is irrelevant except as necessary prop for the programs I am engaged in.)
'apropos graphics' helps if I'm having trouble recalling the name but I also keep the (classic) menu pruned so stuff I'm not likely to even fool around with gets removed.

just mentioning other ways and preferences for doing things.
I would also endorse keeping/adding 'kickoff' as an option for those who find it useful.

+1, I use TDE as a WM more than a DE.
I use classic mode, did not know kickoff was available until now.
