Absence
init script for hald is not a fault - is initialized from dbus
daemon. The question is, what's your kernel version - from distribution
or backports?
from backports; 'uname -r' says:
3.2.0.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae
it's a dual-core Acer Aspire v5 laptop.

So that explains it! Hal from distribution does not work properly with the
kernel from backports. I have updated hal packages, but so far I have not
uploaded this packages into my ppa.
hello!
Slavek sent me some updates which fixed the kernel conflict.
kpowersave now seems alive and happy!
I note that '/opt/trinity/bin/kpowersave' is now at work.
many thanks especially to Slavek but also to everyone else since you
all helped get to the heart of the issue not to mention my
appreciation of the patient support!
