Hi Thierry,
I don't care for "kate" either. I am trying to get rid of it !
I originally went into Synaptic and tried to remove it from
there, but it wanted to remove most of TDE. So I chickened out
and tried to rename every instance that I could find to stop it
opening up when ever I selected a text file. I also tried "open
with" and "remember application". So I've now been round and
deleted every instance that I can find, but it simply replaces
the renamed or deleted files.

Seems we'll need some of the wizards that make TDE. I thought maybe
deleting or renaming the program would do - but after
deleting /opt/trinity/bin/kate... I can still start kate!
I would guess parts of kate are integrated in konqueror (as it
seems to be the default editor).
So removing kate seems at least very difficult. It is the default
embeded editor (and there is no other editor proposed in the list
in the ControlCenter. I can associate kedit with *.txt files, but
kate remains the default embeded editor.
This may explain why it's difficult (impossible?) to remove, but
I've never seen it respawning.

Thanks Thierry,
When I delete the "kate" directory in ".trinity/share/apps/" the
next
time I open "apps" it's back... Maybe respawning was the wrong
word ?
Lisi, It's R14.0. I hadn't checked "KControl". But now you have
pointed it out I will check there. Thanks.
Gerhard,
Thanks for the instructions on changing its priority in "Application
Preference Order" seems to work. At least it doesn't grab the "txt"
files anymore.
That has been my solution to getting rid of kate. I liked gedit, but it
scrambled the contents of a file one too many times so I'm using geany
now. A pretty face, less capable, but has yet to scramble a file just
while changing one byte in it. Plugins are gradually appearing as coders
scratch their own personal itches.
I think my distaste for kate probably starts with its default font
selections. Ugly is being kind...
Thanks all for your help, its appreciated.
Cheers, Gene Heskett
