To add to what Mike said: - R14.0.x is the stable branch. Latest stable version is R14.0.11 - R14.1.0-dev is the development branch. R14.1.0 "should" be out sometime this year, if no major problems happen. - 3.5.13.x is the old branch, before R14, so we are talking before 2014.
Both R14.0.x and R14.1.x are very stable (I use Debian testing + R14.1.0-dev all the time).
