Ubuntu is getting too heavily into data collection lately, and flatpak seems part of it,

I suspect it's actually snaps rather than flatpak you're thinking of. Snaps
apparently live in a single central repository under Ubuntu's control, and
have additional issues on top of the integration problems you always
see with these "universal" packaging solutions.
(I don't run any form of Ubuntu myself, but I read a lot of complaints
about it on Lemmy.)
