Obviously Debian/Devuan got updated too and reset the display manager. As far as I am concerned it's not a bug, just an result of the distribution not respecting modifications by the user and going back to some config file it used for it's own setup.

I my case I found myself loging in from Gnome again.

It is a bug, debconf sysytem should remember default-x-display-manager choice and preserve it on upgrades.
