Thanks, Baron. Yes, I thought of the cable.

After reading your suggestion, I have ordered a new network card because the network card is indeed an old one. I couldn't install with the on-board one because the driver is not in the Squeeze install. I was concentrating on the basic problem, and installed an old network card so that the driver would indeed be supplied by the installer.

I am beginning to wonder whether I damaged the motherboard when I was installing it. :-(
