That's a question you would have to ask of your distro. Gnome *can* run on
plain X, so it depends on exactly how their setup works.

With Gnome and KDE, there are settings to disable it, but for Gnome, at
least, it's the default. I think, though, that TDE will run okay if the
XWayland shim is installed.
