greets!
so I see there's no hal in '/etc/init.d'!
apt-get says the latest version is installed.
I'm considering removing hal and reinstalling it. seems quite risky
given everything that's associated with it.
I cannot rip up this machine too much though, not in busy season.
how should I proceed to restore hald?

Absence init script for hald is not a fault - is initialized from dbus
daemon. The question is, what's your kernel version - from distribution
or backports?
from backports; 'uname -r' says:
3.2.0.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae
it's a dual-core Acer Aspire v5 laptop.

So that explains it! Hal from distribution does not work properly with the
kernel from backports. I have updated hal packages, but so far I have not
uploaded this packages into my ppa.
