Could mplayer be selecting the wrong type of audio output? Try adding
-ao alsa to the command line (if necessary, you can also set the specific
hardware output device—refer to the "AUDIO OUTPUT DRIVERS
(MPLAYER ONLY)" section of the mplayer man page.)
