You can try /opt/trinity/bin/kdm --help to see options. There is a
--nodaemon and a --debug which could help you find out what is happening.

It works,
tested in virtual machine again.
Here on real hardware X starts to start (busy cursor and non-black
background appear briefly), then exits to tty login prompt. Does
trinity-tdm create a log file anywhere? I wonder if
