Confirmed as where it was originally in KDE 3.5:
So it was moved without warning for no apparent reason.
The original intent was 'split' was something you do with a 'window', not something that happens within a 'view'.
Okay, that makes sense; but no warning (though maybe I just don't know where to look; I found nothing with a Commit History search).
