Another option, if and only if your computer's video card uses an nVidia chipset, is to install the manufacturer's proprietary driver module and configuration utility, which offers extended support. I don't know if AMD offers an equivalent. Intel almost certainly doesn't.
The chipset I have in this computer is an Intel. I found out soon enough that Intel does not.
Intel provides no proprietary driver because its people write the FOSS driver code. If you're interested in how that works, check out the intel-gfx mailing list.
