Although I've never knowingly used or joined anything via Hyperkitty, in
looking at it, it seems like it's a duplication of efforts with respect
to a mailing list.

Hyperkitty primarily provides a web archive for mailing lists - our web
archive for our Mailman. It's something we definitely want :)
