The worse in that is that the user coudn't
figure out that he made a
mistake, and not that my hundred-times-tested PCLinuxOS non-official TDE
remaster has such a problem... Are-we facing a code 18 :)

You don't think that there may have been a problem with the installation
media? Don't confuse the noise, some of it unpleasant, for which the OP was
not responsible, with the OP's original problem. I don't honestly think that
a code 18 is very likely in this case. Much more likely a shaky USB key.
(I.e. a hardware problem, neither software nor PEBKAC.)
