You don't think that there may have been a problem with the installation
media? Don't confuse the noise, some of it unpleasant, for which the OP was
not responsible, with the OP's original problem. I don't honestly think that
a code 18 is very likely in this case. Much more likely a shaky USB key.
(I.e. a hardware problem, neither software nor PEBKAC.)

Yes, it might be possible. As a long-time Asus EEE user, I know that software such as
Unetbootin, which is used for transferring the liveCD iso image to a usb key, is not
always 100% reliable first time, but specially in this case, I guess that it is a code
18.
