I checked my setting in kcontrol... My buttons are set to "restore previous session". Does this not mean what I think it does... that when I log in, my desktop applications should be restored to what I had running when I logged out?

Yes! To set this:
kcontrol -> "KDE Components" -> "Session Manager": frame "On Login" you can activate one of these three radio buttons:
- Restore previous session
x Restore Manually saved session
- Start with an empty session
... Once this setting is done in kcontrol, the bottom of KDE main menu changes (see attached file). So you can leave your session after pressing this "Save Session" item. Re-openning it should give something corresponding to what you are dreaming of.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Jeff,
I propose this test (names between '"' can be localized): - Close all application windows - KMenu -> "System" -> "Monitor" -> "KInfoCenter"), activate the radio button titled "Restore Manually saved session", then close KControl saving the setting. - kMenu -> "Internet" -> "KMail". Start KMail (no more than opening it) - KMenu -> "Save Session" (see attached picture somewhere in this thread) - KMenu -> "Log Out..." -> "Close session" - Outside KDE (TDE) Re-enter the same session (I dont know what appens when it is automatic, but I suppose you dont have anything to do!) Once the session is re-openned, you should see the KMail window openned (on the same desktop). If not, there must be someting wrong in your instalation...
Cheers Patrick
