I only see a countdown timer once in a while when some program refuses to
close. Is that what you're talking about? If so, best solution would
probably be to identify the offending program and shut it down first.
That would
work, but then when I restart my machine, none of my apps will
restart. In my experience, the only apps that hang up the shutdown process
are those that the DE is not aware of, e.g. X applications.
