yes, kmail stores the passwords in the wallet. If you want, you can keep
the wallet during your session or let it close after the last app that uses
it is closed. In latter case you have to unlock again by providing the
password for the wallet.
Kmail is the only TDE app I use that requires a password; for others I use
KeepassXC. It would be really nice if there was a platform-agnostic API for
password managers (maybe there is?) and kmail had an option to use it
instead.
