hmmm. am running same setup and libreoffice works uneventfully. might you start it from a terminal and see if it throws any errors or such?
Thanks,
In terminal as user I get the same result, with no error messages. As SUDO up it comes and opens documents happily?
Is there a cure?
Try to uninstall kgtk-qt3-trinity (and maybe gtk-qt-engine-trinity); see okd mail from Slávek:

Problems with crashes GTK programs I have seen only if I had installed kgtk-qt3-trinity (and related), which replacing dialog boxes. But with gtk-qt-engine-trinity, which only changes the appearance of gui widgets, it does not fall.
Note: These problems apparently not related to the update 3.5.13.1.

Question: when will get kgtk-qt3-trinity not longer installed by sefault - too much trouble with gtk applications. I wasn't able to use * lazarus-ide * dropbox * calibre without using using sudo before I uninstalled the culprit.
