that's what I'm going to do. Targeting emu10k2 cards (see below).
However the adapter pci-e to pci adapter (Nick suggested) is useful in another experiment.

I'll make me own connection breakout box. According to user reviews, it's linux compatible. It uses the emu10k2 driver so for $43 US, I'll give it a go.
If anyone finds any definitive problems with this card, please let me know.
Thanks to everyone for all the input. I feel better giving the above card a go.
I'll report back, in detail, my results.
Maybe we should start a dbase of all our hardware, what works, worked and didn't. It could be helpful to others.
