Technically no, but as a practical matter yes. All my machines are multiboot,
so I download only the installation kernel and initrd that those isos
contain, then load them with Grub. From there on it's essentially the same
road as using such a CD. Doing it my way I find it easier to provide specific
installation options that I might or might not remember that I want to use. e.g.:
vga=791 -- hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false netcfg/disable_dhcp=true expert
biosdevname=0 ipv6.disable=1 net.ifnames=0 tasks="standard"
base-installer/install-recommends=false video=1024x768@60 hostname=myhost
Can I avoid installing gnome doing it this way

AFAICT, you can avoid _everything_ related to or depending on Xorg, and a lot
more.
