Was it the standard Debian Bullseye installer or some variant and if so
which?
Which mode did you run it in - expert, guided, other?
Did you get to a screen similar to this?

Did you check the last (standard utils box) and optionally (your choice)
check the penultimate (ssh) box and leave all the other boxes unchecked?
You especially do not want the first box (Desktop) checked if you're not
installing a Desktop using this installer.
Is this where it "refused to proceed", if not where?
What error did it give when it "refused to proceed"?
