I heard that on some computer, Ubuntu has problems with USB ports and
cabled network card not working although being detected. Perhaps this
could also be part of the problem.

Well there is no problem with the other two distros I mentioned on the same
machine Lucid 10.04 with TDE and Hardy 8.04 with Kde3. Both bring up the
plugged media notifier when the usb harddrive is plugged in or when I insert
a video dvd.
One thing I do see though when I plug in the usb harddrive on Precise 12.04
and have the kcontrol usb module open on the desktop, is that sometimes he
harddive is shown initially under ohci_hcd, but when I replug it it shows
correctly under ehci_hcd.
