I have to admit that I have had a terrible
problem installing
anything on this machine with an Asus M2N-X Plus mobo, having had
to use extraordinary incantations of kernel options to get the
install cd's to boot.

I heard that on some computer, Ubuntu has problems with USB ports and
cabled network card not working although being detected. Perhaps this
could also be part of the problem.
