| white fonts, perfectly readable. Not sure if the problem is Ubuntu

an inadvertent experiment here. on my notebook machine, which was happy to
upgrade to ubuntu 14.04, it's white with black text. but on the desktop
machine, which didn't want to go to 14.04 from 12.04 but did take R14,
it's still white text on a black background.
