I have solved the problem, with input from both of you. First, here are
my answers to your questions:
1. No PulseAudio nor pipewire; this problem occurred with the stock
arts, after a minimal (console login) install of Devuan or Debian 12.5,
followed by the standard "aptitude install tde-trinity".
2. Not sure where the "Sound server control module" options you
mentioned are found. I hadn't changed anything, except KMix settings.
Everything else was tested immediately after a fresh install of TDE.
3. Audio was set to standard settings that work for me with other VM's,
in VirtualBox and host audio / mixer settings.
4. Tried a fresh install in VirtualBox of Devuan with their standard
XFCE desktop install option, which installs PulseAudio but not pipewire.
Sound works fine, again with the same VirtualBox audio settings as in
answer #3. I also bumped volume up and down, which caused the original
problem in TDE; still no problems.
Apparently the issue, as I originally suspected, was that one or more
audio settings were somehow defaulted either to "off" (in KMix) or 0%
volume in KMix, when bumping volume up or down with the taskbar volume
slider. I thought I had played with all of the settings in KMix, but
here are the critical ones that worked for me:
* PCM must be "on", in KMix.
* I also used the following settings, from a Konsole (from Nik).
$ amixer sset PCM 100% $ amixer sset Master 60% on After doing those
three things, sound was OK. Perhaps, after an initial install, if the
user presses Up or Down in the volume control, some other default volume
settings/switches get set for the user, by KMix or some other entity?
Not sure what that may be, but perhaps something to look into. One other
thing that is probably a small bug, at least when running in a VM, is
that KMix initially draws with most of the sliders invisible. If I drag
the KMix window slightly with the mouse, a redraw occurs, and all
controls are then visible. (I noticed a few other dialog windows that
did the same thing, but can't remember what those others were. KMix
exhibits this bug quite reliably.) Thanks again! -- Jim

What is interesting in your case is that the problem persists through
a reboot. This seems to point to a setup/config issue for some reasons.
1. Do you use only arts? or do you have PA or pipewire installed too?
2. what options do you have in the Sound server control module?
3. is it possible that for some reasons the audio of the VM is zerod
out in the host mixer? or sent to a different output? Basically try to
figure out whether the problem is from the guest or host.
4.. if you use a different DE in the same VM, do you have the same issue?
