Does someone
here know of a good distro to use (or that actually boots) on
a 586 CPU?

I can't speak from personal experience, but some resources you might want to
look at:
Distrowatch allows you to search for distros by architecture, etc:

Lastly, how about Puppy?
Yes, that's true! Puppy is great on older computers! Good idea!
