there is lid close, powerbutton etc. I disable everything but powerbutton
action. Then you can close lid and work on.
However I do not get the point with plug in external keyboard - you said
note book - why can you not access the keyboard on your notebook - you
just need to open the lid

Sometimes I use a laptop as a workstation. I plug in a kb, mouse and large
monitor. Then I close the laptop to keep it safe.

I'm pretty sure that you can disable all those feature in the power-saving
settings. I don't do it for closing the laptop lid, but I generally disable
the power-saver settings when I am using my screensaver, and that's where I
see the setting to power off when the lid is closed, etc.
