I get wildly variable results from different distros.
I've found wine to be very unpredictable and needs a lot of tweaking. I agree that 1.4.1 is the best version so far, but I've also had good results with 1.6.1..with the particular apps I run in it. But I can't honestly say any version of wine is guaranteed to work for sure.
Vector 6 "Kde Classic" was fabulous for a while, but you're stuck with Firefox 3.6. The newest wine you can use in VL6 is 1.3.9 and I couldn't do much with it.

And if it lets you down, there is always one of the other distros that TDE supports. Debian is great, and Amarok works fine. I haven't tried the others, but will do so over the next few days.
