Looks like there's a bug :-) I just tried
exegnu64_devuan_20150624.iso in virtualbox, grub does not get installed.
Sorry, forgot the offending line from installer_errors.log:
/usr/sbin/grub-install: /usr/sbin/grub-install: cannot execute binary file
