It's probably udev's fault, or at least this sounds an awful lot like the
"predictable" network interface names issue that landed years ago in
most other distros.

Thanks so much for this link. I haven't had a moment to check it yet (as email
still "works" in Devuan Jessie), but I need to sort it out, and maybe this
will lead me to a resolution of this issue. I would really like to upgrade at
least to Ascii/Stretch, and join the hep crowd.
