a related question: is it possible to do an upgrade using the iso
downloaded to say a usb thumbdrive?

Unfortunately no, it isn't. The LiveCD installer basically writes out the
filesystem from the ISO onto a newly formatted disk; to upgrade an
existing installation requires the original .deb files which are not
present on the ISO image.
