So i'd say it depends on the program.
But the OP did not say why he did not rename the file...

Due to the strange file extension Kile
does not recognize it as source LaTeX file
I thought that Linux ignored extensions and went solely by the form of a
file; i.e. extensions don't matter in Linux.
