Is there an application around that shows the state of the modifier keys
(shift, alt, ctrl, the-bad-OS-key, ...)? I'm looking for such a thing to
give visual feedback for TDEs sticky keys feature.

you can install package kbstate-trinity and then add applet to Kicker.
