I respectfully disagree. I installed KDE3 on top of the Ubuntu-9.04 jaunty (GNOME) and it went very smoothly. I never installed KDE4.
Why on earth did it never occur to me that one doesn't have to start with *K*ubuntu in the first place...
There are no install media with only kde3 by chance?
