It looks like it worked (see below) but I logged out of the account and then back in, and got the same thing. :-(

Okay. Should this be done in single-user mode, with X down?

Log in as normal. Allow the error. Then open a root terminal. Hopefully have a root password in, you should do. Then enter the command r14-xdg-update It will repeat the error but this time ask if you want to continue. Press Y and let it rip. It should end with something like the script was run or completed successfully. Something like that.
