Hm, very interesting: env looks different in all consoles that start automatically with KDE, e.g. yakuake and consoles from the last session. In these consoles KDEDIRS is set to "/usr/:/opt/kde3/". But when I start a new console via alt+f2, then KDEDIRS is set to "/usr/" and the console looks even different (other background color). How can that be?
Well, in both consoles PATH does not include /opt/kde/bin. :(

Hi Stefan,
Sorry, I'm stumped on this one. I've never had a problem like that before on any of my machines; the only suggestion I have is if you have another startkde on your system, try renaming it temporarily and see if the problem is fixed (though I don't see how the new startkde could even start KDE3.5 at all).
Odd.
Tim
Hi Tim,
I have renamed the other startkde and restarted KDE3, but it's still the same. BTW, /usr/share/xsessions/kde3.desktop looks fine. It links to /opt/kde3/bin/startkde and is the only desktop labeled "KDE3" (that I have chosen). Thus it's not a problem of starting the wrong startkde script.
OK, maybe I should purge KDE3 and reinstall it.
Regards, Stefan
Thanks for your help!
Finally, I found the reason for this problem and it had nothing to do with KDE3: The problem was just caused by the my /etc/zsh/zshenv which reset the PATH variable.
I've removed these lines and everything works now. :)
BTW: I'm not using the original zsh configuration files. Thus the zsh packages of ubuntu might be fine.
