This is embarrassing. I can't get TDE to start. Downloaded and installed uneventfully. Ran sudo update-alternatives --config-xsession-manager and selected /opt/trinity/bin/starttde from the list. Reboot, no joy.
Per online information, edited /var/lib/AccountsServices/users/<my-user-name> to change XSession=LXDE-pi-x to first tde and when that didn't work TDE. Reboot. Still have LXDE.
I'm clearly missing something. If anyone knows what it is, please tell me. And in any case, once the answer is found I'll write it up and submit it for possible inclusion in the docs.

I don't actually run Raspberry Pi (yet), but the commands look the same as what I use, so I am going to take a wild guess here that your problem looks similar to something that has happened to me while installing on desktops and laptops.
First, I don't know if this applies to R Pi, but make sure that you have uninstalled destop-base and replaced it with desktop-base-trinity. It may be that a Pi doesn't use this.
Second, and more likely, try running this command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity
Sometimes I need to do that to set the preferred DE, and this switches it from the default installation to TDE.
