Hello list,
the executables of KDE3.5 are now located in /opt/kde3/bin, but my KDE3 installation doesn't seam to know that. My present solution for the console was to set the PATH in my .zshrc and it worked fine until yesterday. Yesterday I tried to print a pdf via Kpdf but I got the error that cupsdoprint could not be found since it's located in /opt/kde3/bin. What can I do? How can I set the PATH variable such that KDE3 also knows it?
PS: I have already thrown the PATH assignment into /etc/environment but that didn't help, too.
Regards, Stefan

Hi Stefan,
Can you open /opt/kde3/bin/startkde and verify that the path is being set with the /opt/kde3/bin directory? Also, what do you get when you type env into Konsole from a running KDE3.5 session?
Do you have more than one startkde installed (e.g. is this a KDE4 collision I didn't know about?)
Tim
Tim, In a standard non-graphical chroot, this is the path given from the Final Jaunty KDE3 x86_64 LiveCD when typing env: * PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin * When typing which startkde, though it returns blank. Which is a problem.
In an Xephyr chroot(Graphical Chroot specifically launching /opt/kde3/bin/startkde) this is the path given from the Final Jaunty KDE3 x86_64 LiveCD when typing env: * PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:/opt/kde3/games:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin *
In a standard non-graphical chroot, this is the path given from the Final Jaunty KDE4 x86_64 LiveCD when typing env: * PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin * When typing which startkde, it returns: */usr/bin/startkde*
My suggestion from now on is to append the proper paths before building the LiveCD so that `which startkde` will return the proper path. I specifically introduced some code into the latest build of reconstructor(were hoping to release it soon) so that if `which startkde` fails, to use `which /opt/kde3/bin/startkde` so that it will recognize it is the KDE3 version of the LiveCD.
Btw, could you explain your build process for this? It's been awhile since we've last talked. Bootstrapped? :)

Hi Tim,
thanks for your help.
I've uncommented my PATH assignment in my .zshrc and executed env. Here are the interesting results: PATH=/home/stefan/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/NX/bin KDEDIRS=/usr/
Should KDEDIRS really point to /usr/?
BTW, I get the same PATH when I login using the control+alt+f1 console. Seems that my PATH in /etc/environment is overwritten anyway.
And yes, I have different startkde scripts on my system: % locate startkde /opt/kde-nightly/bin/safestartkde /opt/kde-nightly/bin/startkde /opt/kde3/bin/startkde /usr/bin/safestartkde /usr/bin/startkde
I suppose the wrong startkde is called. I will try to determine that.
Here is the complete output of env: % env LESSOPEN=| /usr/bin/lesspipe %s KDE_FULL_SESSION=true DM_CONTROL=/var/run/xdmctl GS_LIB=/home/stefan/.fonts USER=stefan KDEDIRS=/usr/ HOSTNAME=d630 SSH_AGENT_PID=6477 SHLVL=1 HOME=/home/stefan XDM_MANAGED=/var/run/xdmctl/xdmctl-:0,maysd,mayfn,sched,rsvd,method=classic OLDPWD=/home/stefan DESKTOP_SESSION=kde3 XDG_SESSION_COOKIE=86c4985d911b842c66aeca3b48886e4a-1240855278.209129-1682253260 GTK_RC_FILES=/etc/gtk/gtkrc:/home/stefan/.gtkrc:/home/stefan/.kde3/share/config/gtkrc

Hm, very interesting: env looks different in all consoles that start automatically with KDE, e.g. yakuake and consoles from the last session. In these consoles KDEDIRS is set to "/usr/:/opt/kde3/". But when I start a new console via alt+f2, then KDEDIRS is set to "/usr/" and the console looks even different (other background color). How can that be?
Well, in both consoles PATH does not include /opt/kde/bin. :(

Hi Stefan,
Sorry, I'm stumped on this one. I've never had a problem like that before on any of my machines; the only suggestion I have is if you have another startkde on your system, try renaming it temporarily and see if the problem is fixed (though I don't see how the new startkde could even start KDE3.5 at all).
Odd.

Hi Tim,
I have renamed the other startkde and restarted KDE3, but it's still the same. BTW, /usr/share/xsessions/kde3.desktop looks fine. It links to /opt/kde3/bin/startkde and is the only desktop labeled "KDE3" (that I have chosen). Thus it's not a problem of starting the wrong startkde script.
OK, maybe I should purge KDE3 and reinstall it.

Thanks for your help!
Finally, I found the reason for this problem and it had nothing to do with KDE3: The problem was just caused by the my /etc/zsh/zshenv which reset the PATH variable.
I've removed these lines and everything works now. :)
BTW: I'm not using the original zsh configuration files. Thus the zsh packages of ubuntu might be fine.
