For the archives, and for anyone else who makes the same stupid mistake I did.
I have my TV connected computer set to boot up without requiring a password.
It is running Jessie and TDE14.
I forgot, before I started an upgrade, to set tdm back to requiring a
password.
O.K. No-one but me could be so dumb, but still, for the archives:
I ran an update -> upgrade
- and forgot to reset the dm to tdm (instead of ldm) before rebooting. Yes,
I can be dumb.
When I rebooted after the upgrade, I was in ldm and LXDE. As far as I could
see, ldm offered no choice of desktop. I managed to change back to tdm - but
tdm wasn't asking me to log in, so wasn't giving me a chance to change to
TDE. So there was I, stuck. In neither tdm nor ldm could I change back to
TDE. I could have ldm, a login screen and no choice of session, or tdm and
no login screen.
Solution? A solution, anyway.
# aptitude purge tdm-trinity && aptitude install tdm-trinity
After the first half, it closed my xserver down, but gave me a virtual
terminal login. So I logged in as root and repeated the command. (Up arrow
worked.)
Having found no tdm to purge, the first time round having obviously got that
far when it closed the xserver down, it installed tdm.
So, set dm to tdm.
Cross fingers.
# init 6
And there, large as life and twice as lovely is my login screen!
So, all is well, and I am back in TDE. I haven't listed everything I tried
nor everything I called myself. But hopefully anyone else who gets him or
herself in as stupid a bind will find this, before going through an hour or
two of frustration.
Let's just hope that, unlike our institutions, I actually learn the lessons
that have been learnt!

I've recently upgraded my Debian notebook from 3.5.13.2 to R14. I have a
problem with icons in menu. I think there are 2 separate problems.
First, some icons in menu appear blurred, especially launcher icon.
They're not sharp as previous icons were, they look blurred or
semi-transparent.
The second problem is with icons in KDE Classic icon set - it looks
like some icons are missing after upgrade. At least Graphics,
Multimedia, Programming tools and Tools category icons look like they
are taken from another theme.
Here is menu from my old computer (in fact it's 3.5.13, not 13.2, but
icons are OK):

Icons in Debian notebook after upgrade. Notice blurring in menu launcher
icon:

Is it possible to disable icon semi-transparency? How to re-install
classic icon set?

I have a bash script that can tell kmail, over the dbus, to go get the
mail from the local /var/spool/mail/ after procmail has delivered it.
Since switching t tde, that is failing and I've been for to make kmail
check periodically.
That command is preset in the script to:
Cmd="/usr/bin/qdbus org.kde.kmail /KMail org.kde.kmail.kmail.checkMail"
Since this is TDE, not KDE, is there something in the above line I need
to edit to make it function with this TDE version?
Thanks.
Cheers, Gene Heskett

Hi All,
Debian Jessie, R14.
I've noticed an odd thing. Having closed Iceweasel, it still seems to
be running and taking 98% cpu according to KSysguard. I had noticed
a slowdown in browsing for a few days now, but didn't realise why
until last night.

Hello
I just realized that the planel icon of knetworkmanager/network-manager-tde:
is changed from 3.5.13 to R14: instead of the globe it seems now as a
sort of cabel.
Any reason for this?
thanks

TDE R14, Debian Jessie
I download & open a pdf file with kpdf from a vendor, happens automagically,
kpdf is set as default app for pdf.
I go to 'file>save as" , the save as dialog always starts at /tmp...then I
have to navigate to the dir with saved pdf's...this is a deep dir
structure...I would prefer to have 'save as' open the last used dir...or
something..is this configurable?

hi tde fans! I notice there's the systemtray kmix applet which works
quite well in TDE for managing sound volume but there's a little benign
issue here with r14 on debian jessie.
When I use the mousewheel over the kmix volume speaker in the system
tray, the volume changes but when the kmix icon is clicked on to expand
showing the vol indicator, the position of the vol indicator remains
unaffected.
not a top priority of course so I'm patient to see a fix on this..
thanks
Greetings all;
TDE r4, kmail-1.9.10.
Just in th last 4 or 5 days, the spell checker in the tool pulldown menu
has disappeared. It still works, hilighting the words it _thinks_ are
miss-spelled, but the only way to fix it seems to be playing the 10,000
moneys writing MacBeth again.
Any body know how to re-enable that spelling thing in the tools menu and
make it work again? It did work, for a few days after I installed TDE,
latest. but it left at about the same time it forgot 40 of the 70 or so
filter rules.
Thanks all.
Cheers, Gene Heskett
