I'd put ESP in the first partition, so it's out of the way.
Most guides do seem to recommend putting it first, and given just how
horrible and specification-noncompliant EFI firmware often is, there's a
nonzero chance that the system will fail to boot or otherwise be confused
if you put it elsewhere.
