You're right! Are you running an i386 kernel? For some reason my amd64
system shows the correct -kde3 dependencies, while my i386 system shows
the same incorrect dependencies as yours.
I'll add this info to the bug report so I don't forget...

thanks for your response, and I'm sorry I didn't know there was a bug
filed.
If I try and install emerald-kde3 I get the following dependencies:
compiz-core
compiz-plugins
compiz-wrapper
libdecoration0
libemeraldengine0-kde3
note that there is only one -kde3... the installation then fails because:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/compiz-core_1%3a0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1_i386.deb:
trying to overwrite `/usr/share/man/man1/compiz.1.gz', which is also in
package compiz-core-kde3
I am pretty sure I have installed all the necessary packages, and
believe that the problem is the non-kde3 dependencies.
