The dependency on kdelibs5 means most pure KDE applications and components are essentially off limits to TDE, however as a result of the KDE4 transition many applications now only depend on Qt4, or offer a version that does not depend on KDE. As a result we will only need to be concerned with Qt4 library overhead for most components, which should be minimal.
Do you really think kdelibs5 is a fully off limits? I tried to see if I could get the early KDE4 version of Kicker to run on KDE 4.9 and it turned out to work quite ok and not too slow once I had it mostly working.
I could imagine some kind of migration path where applications would migrate one by one from tdelibs to kdelibs5 in the future.
