Although browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser is listed in about:prefs in the browser, I noticed it is currently /not/ in the prefs.js file in my profile directory - when I opened Konqueror and then opened it with Kate. Firefox's preferences currently show it is the default browser and the box above it to check to see if it's the default each time, is currently not checked. I also had Vivaldi installed, now removed. Will continue testing.
