I have never used anything else but kpdf (package kpdf-trinity) for the past
15+ years. it prints also just fine.
I have seen okular once or twice, but no idea what you mean by workalike.
The printing is done by the cups server. It took some time to configure 10y
ago. I replaced printer last year HP 5L -> HP M402dn - no issues. The 5L
was not maintainable anymore (or at least it was not worth). I hope the new
one will serve another 10y.
