I have just followed up both Debian and TDE, and had to do the migration one way or another for myself - this list helped a lot. Prior to that I too just copied ~/Mail from one installation to another.

I'm on 14.0.2 (Mint) and I've still my mails in ~/Mail and I cannot remember, that I had to do something unusual from 13.* to 14.0.
