I don't see any real benefit in adding that space, I find it uglier also.

i already did. They are worried users will start complaining. If the devs feel, enough people approve of it on
the mailing
list, they will do it. So make sure to share your opinion.
I doubt anybody has time to work on it, but you can just open a bug
with the request and it will be handled.
