So, part of one of my issues (and one of the more annoying) is resolved; even
if I am mystified why I couldn't do that before. Maybe some lost config file?

You can tell it not to display the panel hiding buttons (uncheck "Show left
panel-hiding button" and "Show right panel-hiding button" in the Panel
->
Hiding configuration page). Can't click on them, mistakenly or otherwise,
if they're not there.
