ok, I'll have to boot up my kde4 (or reinstall it); I didn't at the time have a sense that the plasmoids were tied to a system-tray' (I take your word for this!) or maybe I'm confusing them with 'activities'.
That would be because they're not tied to a system tray. They can (and do) live on the desktop background, too. (Where, uh, they are normally covered by other windows...)
I see. well, I seldom look at my desktop so I guess this isn't for me anyway.
