When I fire up Konversation I get a screen that
says this, over and

As an IRC newbie I once had a similar problem when trying to join
#trinity-users on freenode with kopete.
Do you have a nick name? Is your nick registered with libera.chat? With
kopete I had to log in with my nick and enter a password to get into
the chatroom.
Not all chatrooms require to register/log in but #trinity-users does,
AFAIR.
